En|vi|ron|ment [ɛn'va̮i(ə)rənmənt , …mɛnt], das; -s, -s [engl. environment, eigtl. = das Umgeben(sein); Umgebung, zu frz. environ = um … herum] (Kunstwiss.):
mithilfe von Objekten aus dem Alltagsleben künstlerisch gestalteter Raum, der die Betrachterin bzw. den Betrachter umgibt u. deren bzw. dessen aktive Teilnahme wecken soll.

[ɪn'vaɪərənmənt; englisch, eigentlich »Umgebung«, zu französisch environ »um. .. herum«] das, -s/-s, Ausdrucksform der bildenden Kunst in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, die aus Assemblage und Combine-Painting entwickelt wurde und wichtige Impulse aus der Happening-Bewegung erhielt. Das Environment besteht aus einer räumlich definierten Anordnung verschiedenartiger Materialien und/oder (Gebrauchs-)Gegenstände (oft in Verbindung mit Malerei, Plastik, Licht u. a. Medien) und bezieht den Betrachter unmittelbar ein. Eine Vorstufe des Environments stellte der Merzbau von K. Schwitters in Hannover dar (1923 ff.; 1943 zerstört). Besondere Bedeutung erlangte das Environment in der Pop-Art (R. Rauschenberg, C. Oldenburg) und mit Arbeiten von G. Segal und E. Kienholz; Formen des Environments finden sich u. a. auch in der kinetischen Kunst (Lygia Clark, C. Cruz-Díez, H. Goepfert, J. Le Parc, G. Colombo, Zero) und der individuellen Mythologie (P. Thek, M. Buthe). Das Environment wirkt in Rauminstallationen weiter.
